What is the First-Year Seminar Program?

First-Year Seminar is a program created by McKendree faculty to assist incoming first-year students with the sometimes difficult intellectual and personal transition to college life. The program is designed to help students navigate through that first critical semester in college. The weekly seminars emphasize academic skills and social awareness to enhance students' enjoyment and likelihood of success during their college experience and especially their first year. Students get know their colleagues and themselves through interactive class activities, community service, and social events.

Each seminar section is limited in enrollment and is taught by a faculty or staff member who is also the student's academic advisor. An upperclass student assists as a peer mentor. For further information, see First Year Seminars under Courses of Study in the 2004-2005 College Catalog.
