Libraries need to be at the forefront of a new art/writing/reading scholarship that breaks free
of old traditions.

Why?
We are generally better technologically equipped than than most museums and home computers.

We supply faster connections than most
residences, businesses and institutions.

We offer trained staffs already experienced
with using new technologies effectively.

We can place the new technologies within a
historical context. Ebooks are only another
evolutionary stage in the history of the book
and libraries.

We can put libraries at the cutting edge
of technological advancements.
The new
technologies are ripe for alternative
programming to motivate staffs, docents
and underserved communities.

We can and should put on exhibitions to
redefine library spaces.
We can be a gathering
place for a
new generation and audience.

Many grant possibilities exist that favor the
library community in support of such projects.

How do I put on an
eBook show?

Select an exhibition theme. Think of it more as
a relaxed party atmosphere than a pretentious
museum or gallery show.

Select a group of artists. Whole displays could
be developed around children's artwork and
related eBooks or the disabled population or a
specific eBook device or eBook collection or...

Collect visual resource materials from eBook vendors and other print or Internet
sources to generate attention. You may use
my (e)Literacy Eye Chart design (with proper
copyright notice). Don't forget the history
of the book and libraries.

Publicize the event. By all means, talk to
the media. Education is our goal! A three sentence explanation of how libraries are
changing can do a world of good for a
library's community.

Enjoy yourself. There is nothing like the
example of a good librarian competently and enthusiastically working with eBooks to make
people feel comfortable and intrigued.

If you use our model, we would appreciate it if
you would provide us (Charlotte Johnson, SIUE
& Bill Harroff, McKendree College) and our home institutions a credit line in your publicity and
send us documentation of your promotions.
